George Washington Carver (1894-1943)

by Latorial Faison

In Diamond Grove, Missouri
Back in 1894
Another slave child was born
A bouncing baby boy

This slave child was called George,
George Washington Carver
Who knew that he'd grow up
To be a revolutionary farmer

George was just a baby
When from the plantation
He and his mother were abducted
By a band of slave raiders.

His mother was sold and shipped away
To some place south or north
But little George was traded
By his master for a race horse

George worked as a farm hand
Yet he had a passion for knowledge
He got a high school education
And was the first black at Simpson College

Carver studied the science of farming
For he had an agricultural touch
And he later became famous
For deriving new things from peanuts

The south needed Carver's research
For cotton was its main source
But with Carver's research and inventions
The south would be known for more

Carver's research included
Creating many useful products
100 uses for sweet potatoes
And over 300 for the peanut

George Washington Carver
Died in 1943
But his extensive research
Made agricultural history
